A system called Blackboard is the means by which all classroom Internet services are delivered.

For those who have used Blackboard 5 in the past, as well as those using Blackboard for the first time, please note the following change: John Jay College no longer hosts its own Blackboard server.  The primary impact of this change is that in order to log in to Blackboard you will first need to log into the CUNY Portal.

Everyone who uses Blackboard must have a valid and working e-mail address. As of January 2005 all students at the college have an email address.  If you have a pre-existing John Jay email address it will be replaced by a new address.  This will be the only email address allowable for Blackboard.  You may view your email address in eSIMS at http://esims.cuny.edu/jj

 Once you know your John Jay e-mail account, you will need to register into the CUNY Portal by going to: https://portal.cuny.edu/portal/site/cuny/index.jsp?epi-content=LOGIN. Click on "Register Now" for new accounts to the Portal. Even though you may have a previous username and password under the old Blackboard system, those conventions will not work in Blackboard 6. The Portal creates a Username (usually the first letter of your first name and then the entire last name) and during the registration process you can create your own password. A word of caution: for those who have similar last names like Smith, Cruz or Lee, etc. the created username will be followed by numbers. For instance, Chris Smith and Charles Smith will have either csmith or csmith1 as their username. Change the username to a unique identifier name so that it is not confused with similar names.

 After you successfully log into the CUNY Portal you will be directed to a main page that can display all the information about you. It appears in "My Profile" that can be found on the left side of the screen. "Modify" the profile if you need to change any information such as your password.

In some instances the CUNY Portal may not be accessible .  You can, however, bypass the Portal and access Blackboard via a backdoor address at:

https://blackboard-doorway.cuny.edu   Once there, input your user name and password.
