A year after the Newtown Connecticut tragedy, gun control advocates and opponents can agree on one thing: we need to do a better job at identifying troubled individuals who might do violence to themselves and others. But that also requires re-examining our dysfunctional mental health system to ensure we don’t needlessly stigmatize thousands of Americans — and get them the help they need. Wendy Brennan, executive director of the New York office of the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), and Crispin Jackson a CUNY student who has wrestled successfully with mental illness, discuss the challenges with host Steve Handelman on the next episode of Criminal Justice Matters.

Show guests Professor and licensed psychologist Katherine Stavrianopoulos of John Jay’s Counseling Department as well as John Jay student and vice president of the John Jay NAMI chapter, Amalia Rudnick will be present for a lively post-screening discussion with host, Steve Handelman.
