Event Description:

Book Talk:

A Wild Justice
The Death and Resurrection of Capital Punishment in America

Wednesday, May 7,
4.15 pm to 5.30 pm
Room 9.64, New Building

Evan Mandery is a Professor and Chairperson of the Criminal Justice Department at John Jay. A graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law, Evan brings his experience as a former capital litigator, and the author of fifteen law  reviews and a textbook (currently in its second edition) on the subject of capital punishment, to the writing of A Wild Justice. He is also an active fiction writer and has published three novels including, most recently, Q, which was published in 2011 by Harper Collins.

A Wild Justice draws upon never-before-published original source detail to tell the epic story of two of the most consequential, and largely forgotten, moments in Supreme Court history: the striking down of Georgia’s death
penalty law in Furman v. Georgia (1972), and its swift reinstatement four years later in Gregg v. Georgia. In the process, it gives an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look at the Court, the justices, and the political
complexities of one of the most racially-charged and morally vexing issues of our time.

All are welcome. RSVP: oar@jjay.cuny.edu
