2010 World Science Festival

Science in the Streets
At the 2010 World Science Festival held on the streets of New York City in June, John Jay faculty, staff and students from the forensic science program were out in force giving hundreds of enthusiastic visitors a glimpse of a CSI experience. The college's four-tent exhibition featured a cordoned "crime scene" that encouraged visitors to investigate the scene from a scientific point of view. Other displays included activities such as: dusting for fingerprints, examining drop height on blood spatter patterns, examining blood cells, hairs, and insects under the microscope, and examining firearms evidence. The annual event is a celebration of science -- taking it out of the laboratory and into the streets, theaters, museums and public halls of New York City.

U.S. Senate Confirms Members of the John Jay Community to Key Posts in the Obama Administration
James Lynch, Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in June as Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) at the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to joining the faculty at John Jay, Lynch was a professor at American University. Much of his professional life has focused on measurement issues in criminal justice data and statistics. His work with Al Biderman on comparing crime statistics from the Uniform Crime Report and the National Crime Victimization survey is considered the gold standard of comparative statistical analysis. BJS annually collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information on crime, criminal offenders, crime victims, and criminal justice operations. Also confirmed were alumni Beatrice Wilkinson Welters (MA '78) as Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago and Benjamin B. Tucker (BS '77) as Deputy Director for State, Local and Tribal Affairs at the Office of National Drug Control Policy. For more about them, see Alumni Spotlights below.
