Gala Affair

A Gala Affair
Nearly 300 supporters and friends of the College turned out on October 21 for the John Jay's annual Educating for Justice Gala that brought in more than $530,000 to support the John Jay Honors Program and other student-related endeavors. The 2010 Award for Corporate Leadership was presented to the IBM Smarter Cities Initiative and was accepted by IBM Senior Vice President and General Counsel Robert Weber. In New York City, the Smarter Cities Initiative has worked in partnership with the NYPD's Real Time Crime Center and the Fire Department's Coordinated Building Inspection and Data Analysis System. The award was presented jointly by NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro and alumnus Salvatore Cassano (BS '76), Fire Commissioner. The Award for Civic Leadership was given to Frederick A.O. "Fritz" Schwartz Jr., the former NYC Corporation Counsel who currently serves as chief counsel to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University and has an extensive record of involvement in the nonprofit sector. The award was presented by Jack Rosenthal, Senior Fellow at Atlantic Philanthropies and a former editor of The New York Times. The gala featured entertainment by Pedro Pablo Martinez and his Afro-Cuban jazz fusion ensemble. (From left to right: Robert Weber, Fritz Schwartz and John Jay President Jeremy Travis.)

New NYS Permanent Sentencing Commission to be Housed at John Jay
New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman announced in October the creation of the state's first Permanent Sentencing Commission, which will be located at John Jay where it will draw upon the College's extensive resources in the field of criminal justice. Alumnus Martin Horn (MA '74), Distinguished Lecturer at John Jay, was named as the commission's executive director. The commission will conduct a comprehensive and ongoing evaluation of sentencing laws and practices and recommend reforms to improve the quality and effectiveness of statewide sentencing policy. "I am honored to serve in this important effort," said Horn. "New York's sentencing scheme is a patchwork of provisions added over time with serious consequences for defendants, victims, and the community."

John Jay Wins 5-Year Development Grant from U.S. Department of Education

Edward V. Rochford

Although this year's elections ousted many incumbents, such was not the case for Edward V. Rochford (BS '72) who was just re-elected to his seventh three-year term as Sheriff of Morris County, NJ. But even before Rochford took the reins of the Sheriff's Office some 18 years ago, he was no stranger to the field of law enforcement. He previously served for 27 years in the Morris Township Police Department retiring with the rank of deputy chief. Under his leadership, the Sheriff's Office has the distinction of being the first sheriff's office in New Jersey to earn national accreditation in 1998 from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). And that achievement wasn't the last. In 2004 the Morris County Sheriff's Office became the 24th law enforcement agency in the United States to receive the "Triple Crown Award" from the National Sheriff's Association for not only being accredited by CALEA, but also for accreditation from the American Correctional Association (ACA), and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). With its 337 officers and employees the Sheriff's Office, established in 1739, serves a population of more than 490,000 residents. Its $32 million state-of-the art correctional facility, opened in 2000, is designed to handle 528 inmates in eight housing pods utilizing a direct supervision management style. The facility offers a wide range of programs to assist inmates in returning to the community. Among the services that are provided to those inmates who choose to make their time productive are classes for the GED and pre-GED, English as a Second Language, basic literacy and vocational counseling.

Student Highlights

Tiffany Rivera

She's a winner! Tiffany Rivera, a sales manager from the Bronx and a senior majoring in forensic psychology, was a contestant on the TV game show "Wheel of Fortune" on October 19. She ended up walking away with $13,200 after a come-from-behind win. Rivera applied online for the show and was called in for an audition. She handily passed the tryout and went on the show to compete against an executive recruiter from Wisconsin and a kindergarten teacher from Illinois.
