Transforming New York State's Juvenile Justice System
Governor David Patterson's Task Force on Transforming Juvenile Justice released its final report on December 14. The report, Charting a New Course: A Blueprint for Transforming Juvenile Justice in New York State, calls on officials to reinvest in community-based, rehabilitative, treatment-focused services that improve outcomes for youth and their families while also ensuring greater public safety. "The Task Force's recommendations will bring New York State in line with best practices that can help troubled youths and their families, protect the public, and optimize scarce state resources," said Task Force Chair Jeremy Travis, President of John Jay. Little more than one month later, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the city's Department of Juvenile Justice will merge into its child welfare agency, the Administration for Children's Services, which will allow youths who commit crimes, but are not considered dangerous, to have easier access to an expanding assortment of in-home programs. For a summary of the task force's report or to access the complete report, click here

Alumni Spotlight
Salvatore J. Cassano (BS '76)

One of John Jay's first fire science graduates, Salvatore J. Cassano (BS '76), is now the 32nd Commissioner of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). At the time of the announcement on December 21, Mayor Michael Bloomberg noted, "He has a lifetime of unmatched experience and will be an outstanding commissioner for the FDNY." In his 40 years with the department, Cassano, who graduated summa cum laude, has held every rank and was chosen after a nationwide search. The Vietnam veteran began his career in the FDNY in 1969 and has served as a firefighter, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, division chief, deputy assistant chief, assistant chief and chief of operations. At the time of his appointment, he had been serving as the Chief of the Department - the highest-ranking uniform officer, a position he held since 2006. Bloomberg noted, "His record as a leader in the department speaks for itself - there have never been fewer fire deaths during any other eight-year period in recorded City history." During his career, Cassano was cited for bravery five times for rescuing New Yorkers from burning buildings. In the eight years since 9/11 and the loss of 343 firefighters, he played a crucial role in rebuilding the Department creating a better prepared, better trained and better equipped FDNY. President Jeremy Travis said, "The entire John Jay community is excited and proud that Chief Cassano has been selected for this important post. He not only exemplifies the excellence of our student body and their commitment to public service, but also has been a firm advocate of higher education for members of the FDNY." In his statement, Cassano said, "Our top priority is and will continue to be the safety of our personnel and the safety of the public. The best way to keep the public safe from fires is by preventing them. Preventing fires through a new "risk-based" system of conducting inspections will be a big step toward reducing the number of fires in our City, and I look forward to implementing this program citywide."

Student Highlights

After a rigorous application process competing against hundreds of candidates from the nation's top universities, junior Crystal Ferguson won an appointment as a White House intern for the spring 2010 semester. Ferguson, who is a member of the women's cross-country and basketball teams, is no stranger to politics. She recently worked on the reelection campaign of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In 2007, she participated in the All-Star Project's Development School for Youth, a 14-week leadership training program for young people ages 16-21. Her participation earned her a paid internship the following summer with Health Plus Insurance Company. Ferguson, who is a resident of East New York, is majoring in Deviant Behavior and Social Control and hopes to become an attorney. "When I first found out, I was crying," she said. "I just hope I can make as many connections as possible, learn as much as I can and represent myself and John Jay College to the best of my ability."
