Building the College's Future Brick by Brick
Join the growing ranks of alumni taking the unique opportunity to leave their mark upon the College by purchasing a brick ($250 or $500), a tree ($1,000) or a bench ($5000) on the Jay Walk, a 60,000 square foot esplanade that will link Haaren Hall to the new building on 11th Avenue. It's a way to both commemorate a significant person in your life as well as provide needed scholarships for our students through a tax-deductible donation. Professor Anthony Carpi Honored with Presidential Award
Professor Anthony Carpi of the Department of Sciences was the proud recipient last month of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. Carpi, who joined John Jay in 1997, is a professor of Environmental Toxicology. "I am truly honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award, and very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with outstanding students at John Jay," he said. "The real reward is knowing that the mentoring programs we've created have provided the support and resources that our students need to reach their full potential." Carpi is a co-founder of John Jay's PRISM (Program for Research Initiatives for Science Majors) and of the College's Math and Science Resource Center, and its science peer mentoring program. He was one of 11 individuals named by President Obama to receive the award. "We are thrilled by this recognition of Professor Carpi's work, and, more broadly, of the science program at John Jay," said President Jeremy Travis. "This award to Professor Carpi, who has transformed the science program at John Jay and has established strategies aimed at mentoring young scientists, underscores his accomplishments."

Opening of New Building Less Than a Year Away
Progress on John Jay's spectacular new campus building is on schedule and on budget, according to Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Robert Pignatello. Pignatello was joined at a special New Building Update forum on Dec. 2 by President Jeremy Travis, Vice President for Marketing and Development Vivien Hoexter, CUNY Vice Chancellor Iris Weinshall and project coordinator Ynes Leon for a virtual walk-through of the half-billion dollar facility. "We've made tremendous progress over the last couple of years," Pignatello said, "and I can't say enough about the University's support through tough financial times to see this project through." The as-yet-unnamed new building boasts more than 600,000 square feet of space spread over 13 stories. It will be home to student services, classrooms and laboratories, academic departmental offices, a theater and moot court, conference spaces and dining facilities and a 60,000 square foot campus commons. The building will include a memorial to the public safety heroes of 9/11 who had studied at John Jay, with a one-ton piece of recovered steel from the World Trade Center as a centerpiece.

New York Magazine and Philadelphia Inquirer Win John Jay Criminal Justice Reporting Award
Robert Kolker of New York Magazine and Craig McCoy, Nancy Phillips, Dylan Purcell, John Sullivan, and Emilie Lounsberry, of the Philadelphia Inquirer are the winners of the John Jay/Harry Frank Guggenheim 2011 Excellence in Criminal Justice Reporting Awards. Kolker, who won in the single-story category investigated the 1992 case of New York State resident Frank Sterling, who served 19 years for a crime he did not commit after making a false confession to police. The article, said one of the award's judges, was "a stunning example of how the press can inform the public and help keep justice in our criminal justice system." The team from the Philadelphia Inquirer won on the basis of its four-part series "Justice: Delayed, Dismissed and Denied." The series exposed flaws in the Philadelphia court system. Said President Jeremy Travis: "This year's winning entries demonstrated once again how criminal justice journalism at its highest level can lead to changes in public policy and community awareness."

Alumni Spotlight

Alejandra Morales (MA '89)

Alejandra Morales (MA '89), the director of the Child/Adolescent Outpatient Services Department at Trinitas Regional Medical Center's Behavioral Health and Psychiatry Department, continues to draw on the education she received more than two decades ago as a graduate student in John Jay's Forensic Psychology program. "Even though it's been a while, I think the courses and curriculum were set up to give you a very good understanding of the mind, of being able to conduct assessment," she said. "I think it was a very strong, and still is a very strong, foundation." Morales, 55, was born in Argentina and came to the United States when she was nine. She attended Brooklyn College as an undergraduate and received her doctorate in psychology from Pace University. Prior to being appointed director of Trinitas's program in Elizabeth, NJ, last year, Morales was a clinical psychologist at the center and still maintains a part-time private practice working with adults and adolescents. The programs under her supervision include ones for juvenile sex offenders and victims of sexual abuse, as well as psychiatric evaluations, and individual and family therapy. "There has always been something fascinating about abnormal behavior and being able to understand it," said Morales. "Not everyone likes to work with a population like that, but I think the understanding is very important because then services can be put in place," she said. "I also think that in working with children and adolescents it's important to intervene earlier; it's much more difficult with adults because personalities are already set in place." As a John Jay student, Morales was an extern at Bellevue Hospital Center doing testing and evaluation of patients under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. After graduating, she worked with MICA (Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted) patients who had a history of incarceration, but later returned to Bellevue where Morales worked until 2006. In addition to her clinical and supervisory work, Morales also serves as an expert witness in Union County, NJ, testifying in cases involving trauma. "When I have to provide my education before a jury in court, John Jay happens to be the second name after my bachelor's degree and it's very well respected, very well known," she said.

Student Highlights
Naithram Singh

Most students would be thrilled to know they will graduate a semester early, but Naithram Singh is of two minds about it. Yes, he is looking forward to the next stage of his education, but it will mean a separation from John Jay. “I love it here,” he said. “I really enjoy my time at John Jay; I’m here six days a week.” Singh, 19, is a recipient of the New York Needs You Fellowship (NYNY). The program, which comes with a stipend, brings in professionals from a variety of fields to meet with students on networking, resume writing, and the give and take of constructive feedback. In addition to being a NYNY fellow, Singh is also part of its recruitment project. “The program has been a success and they want to extend the number of fellows,” he said. Singh’s family emigrated from Guyana in the 1980s and he is a first-generation college student. He turned down a full scholarship from Babson College in Massachusetts to attend John Jay. “I’ve never regretted not going to Babson,” he said. “John Jay’s a home away from home.” In addition to the NYNY fellowship, Singh, a sophomore and criminal justice major, is also a recipient of a Department of Homeland Security scholarship. He is working with Demis Glasford, a faculty member of the Department of Psychology on a project involving terrorist recruitment. “It’s very intense work,” said Singh. Next semester, he will join the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. “I received an email from Mr. Ernest Lee [associate director of the McNair Program] this morning saying, ‘Ready for a hardworking semester?’ Yes, I’m ready.”
