Award Winning Author, Patricia Cornwell, Donates $1 Million to John Jay
Patricia Cornwall, America's premier crime writer, has donated $1 million to establish a Crime Scene Academy that will become the first and only international center for crime scene training for professionals, undergraduate and graduate degree students, as well as interested members of the general public. "Police, forensic scientists and pathologists, and so many others, have been unfailingly generous in sharing their expertise with me. And now it is my privilege to give something back. The greatest gift is knowledge, and there's no better place to get it than John Jay College," she noted. The Crime Scene Academy will have five primary components: the Cornwell Fellows Program for crime-scene scientists, senior investigators, prosecutors, and medical examiner's personnel; the Police Leadership Program for senior executives in law enforcement to foster a better understanding of criminal case management; Law Enforcement and/or Crime Scene Laboratory Training Modules that will be developed for police, laboratory analysts and examiners; a Post-Baccalaureate Forensic Science Certificate Program for students with undergraduate degrees in the natural sciences; and K-12 Teacher Programs/Continuing Education Public Programs for K-12 science teacher training and courses that will be open to the public. In accepting the gift, President Jeremy Travis said, "This generous gift from Ms. Cornwell will allow us to address the critical need to enhance the quality of crime scene analysis around the country." College Gets $1.5 Million for Faculty Research Efforts
John Jay will receive more than $1.5 million in federal funds, both in grants and Congressional earmarks, to support a variety of criminal justice research initiatives including gang violence and crime prevention, sex offender management, domestic violence, undergraduate science education, public safety leadership and emergency response to large-scale disasters. "Our faculty are recognized world over for their expertise and these funds attest to their scholarship," said President Jeremy Travis who noted "the Congressional earmarks will insure that national visibility is given to the landmark work of the Center for Crime Prevention and Control and the Christian Regenhard Center for Emergency Response Studies." A $178,600 earmark, sponsored by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) with the backing of the state's Congressional delegation -- particularly Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) -- will support the creation of the Christian Regenhard Center, named after a rookie firefighter who died on September 11. Glenn Corbett, professor of public management, will direct the new Center that will study emergency response to large-scale disasters. (Other federally funded projects will be highlighted in upcoming editions of Alumni News.)

Student Highlights

Di'Indra Forgenie

Di'Indra Forgenie recently came back from Argentina where she studied Spanish at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata through a study abroad program sponsored by CUNY. "I studied Spanish there because I wanted to take a second language and because I hope to be a lawyer and having a second language is an asset especially here in New York City" where she hopes someday to help those who need legal support but do not speak English. The Trinidadian senior, who is majoring in Justice Studies, is also interested in helping women who experience domestic violence and think it somehow culturally acceptable. "The Summer Pre-Law Program is what really set off this chain of events," she says. "I found a great support system here at John Jay and this program was absolutely wonderful." Through the Department of Puerto Rican/Latin American Studies, the College collaborates with St. John's University in the Ronald H. Brown Scholars Program that helps students from under-represented and low income groups to prepare for careers in law. Forgenie went through the program both as a sophomore and a junior. "I felt that I was part of a community. It changed how I thought about college. After the program, my grades really went up." For Forgenie, her college experience is, in many respects, a second career. She started ice skating competitively when she was six years old doing singles and pairs with her brother. "I was up at 4:00 AM, at the rink by 5:30 AM, then to school, then back to the rink." By the time she reached junior high, the grueling routine was interfering with her education. "I had to decide whether to continue skating and be home-schooled or have a normal life." She opted for the normal life. That's not to say that she left skating completely. After school, she worked at Sky Rink at the Chelsea Piers until 2007 going from Event Coordinator to Skating School Manager. "My experience on the ice taught me a lot about discipline and time management," she notes – skills she is currently using to achieve her educational goals.
