The New Center for Business Preparedness
John Jay College recently announced the appointment of Thomas E. Cavanagh as Director of the newly established Center for Business Preparedness. Cavanagh comes to the College from The Conference Board, where he was senior research associate and principal investigator for a series of major reports on corporate security and preparedness. According to President Jeremy Travis, "Since 9/11, John Jay has aggressively focused on the changing security imperatives of the private sector and developed a number of programs to meet these needs. The Center will provide another vital resource." The Center will serve as a research hub and clearinghouse for information on best practices, preparedness standards and procedures, and analyses of public safety and corporate security strategies. The first initiative will entail interviewing corporate security executives to determine the extent to which specific preparedness standards have been implemented. The project will also report metrics on corporate procedures for emergency response, disaster recovery and crisis management. The project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to The Conference Board. Inc. For more information, click here.

Alumni Spotlight

Henry "Hank" Lemons (BS '78)

Alumnus Henry "Hank" Lemons (BS '78) recently had new milestones added to his long and successful career in criminal justice. Governor David A. Paterson last month named Lemons as interim chair of the New York State Board of Parole and interim chief executive officer for the Division of Parole. A commissioner of the Board of Parole since 2007, his major responsibilities include determining release dates for inmates serving indeterminate prison terms, establishing conditions of release for inmates who are paroled and revoking parole when it is determined that a releasee has violated those conditions. Before serving on the Board, he was the deputy chief investigator for the New York State Attorney General in the Downstate Region's Criminal Investigations Bureau from 2004 to 2007. Prior to that, he was the assistant chief investigator in the Special Investigations Bureau for the Kings County District Attorney. A Bedford-Stuyvesant native, Lemon served with the New York City Police Department as a former sergeant and detective for the first 20 years of his career. He also is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and served for four years of active duty with the United States Air Force.

Student Highlights

Over the course of the last 15 years, 196 students have participated in the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program. Named after the astronaut Ronald E. McNair, the program's goal is to prepare selected students with strong academic potential for doctoral studies. Two students who are currently involved with the program are Jessica Armstrong and Shirley Sut Yee Chan. Armstrong, whose family lives in Texas, has been on her own since she was 17. She is a transfer student from New Orleans and is currently a student in the College's BA/MA program majoring in forensic psychology. She plans on earning a PhD in clinical psychology specializing in addiction studies. Chan gave up a full scholarship at Barnard College to come to John Jay where she is majoring in forensic psychology. She hopes to attend medical school after graduation and is taking all of her science requirements now. She is still deciding whether she will go into emergency medicine or psychiatry. For more information about the McNair Program, click here.
