With Special Thanks

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Gerald W. Lynch Theater, an impressive program of artists, including talented faculty, staff, and students, international guest artists and alumni took center stage with excerpts from some of the productions scheduled this season. Alumna Robin Taylor Dzul (BA/MA'03) mesmerized the audience as she, her husband and partner Javier Dzul, and aerialist Chelsea Bacon of Dzul Dance painted suspended landscapes with their breathtaking, contemporary choreography. Ms. Dzul, formerly with Lori Bellilove and Company: The Art of Isadora Duncan, studied forensic psychology while at John Jay, at which time she was involved in research projects for the FBI and served as an adjunct faculty member. Later in the program, alumna Kimberly Roberts (BA'06) stunned the crowd with a powerful excerpt from Ntozke Shange's 1975 For Colored Girls who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. Ms. Roberts, seen most recently in a production of For Colored Girls... at the Bayview Correctional Facility for Women, received her BA in Forensic Psychology along with a Certificate in Dispute Resolution. Brava Robin! Brava Kimberly! Congratulations and special thanks to all who participated in this wonderful evening.

President Jeremy Travis Testifies Before Senate Judiciary Committee
Although the level of crime in the United States is at the lowest level in a generation, "we should not be complacent for one minute about the current rate of violence," President Jeremy Travis told the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on September 10 at hearings that were held to inform the next Congress, and the next administration on ways to implement effective anti-crime strategies. Noting that the Uniform Crime Report can "mask local variations" in levels of crime, Travis called for the creation of "a robust and timely national crime data system that would allow police executives, policy makers, elected officials, academics and community groups to have a data-informed policy discussion about crime trends and effective responses." He also called for support on a national scale for the implementation of proven crime reduction strategies as those successfully used in Boston, MA; Cincinnati, OH; and in High Point, NC by Professor David Kennedy of John Jay's Center for Crime Prevention and Control. Yet another recommendation put forth by Travis is the creation of "The National Safety Network," an initiative to simultaneously reduce crime, abate drug markets, reduce reliance on incarceration and promote better relationships between the police and minority communities. Governor Paterson Appoints President Travis as Chair of NYS Juvenile Justice Task Force
Governor David Paterson recently announced the appointment of President Jeremy Travis as Chair of the Juvenile Justice Task Force. In accepting the appointment, President Travis said, "It is indeed an honor to serve as chair of the New York State Juvenile Justice Task Force. I know that Governor Paterson is committed to insuring the safety of our state's families and children and I share with him this commitment. I am confident that this task force will enable us to develop a more comprehensive and less punitive approach to the placement of juveniles involved in the juvenile justice system." Over the course of the next year, this Task Force is charged with developing strategies to transform the state's juvenile justice system.

Alumni Spotlight

Karen Michonski (MA '07)

Karen Michonski (MA '07)
Growing up in Jersey City, NJ, Karen Michonski now finds herself in San Diego working at a "dream job." She's a criminal justice research technician with the San Diego Association of Governments (Sandag). Looking back, the road to this position began when she attended Rutgers University as an undergraduate. "I was originally interested in political science, but I quickly realized it was not for me. Luckily, I took a summer class in criminology and I was so fascinated by the subject that I decided to major in it. When I graduated in 2005, I said I'm going to apply to one school and one school only and that was John Jay." Another marker on the road west, occurred in May 2007 just the day before her graduation. She was selected to attend a dinner for honorary degree recipients where she happened to be seated next to President Jeremy Travis who suggested she contact the criminal justice division of Sandag when in San Diego. "During my studies in the master's of criminal justice program, I became very interested in prisoner reentry," she says – an interest that now has turned into practice. At Sandag, she is responsible for data collection, input and analysis from a variety of criminal justice agencies and service providers in San Diego county. This work includes doing interviews and surveys in detention facilities. One of her primary responsibilities is working on California's Senate Bill 618 concerning prisoner reentry, which was passed in 2006. The legislation calls for pre- and post- release services and Michonski's job is to help evaluate the program. She also participates as a statistician with law enforcement in gang operations. "It's sometimes hard to find your path," she notes. "But the people of John Jay are great resources in helping you find your direction and providing you with all kinds of opportunities." Just one example was the internship with Channel 13,(WNET-PBS) that she obtained through John Jay's Graduate Career Advising Office. " The College is filled with opportunities. The faculty and staff are student-oriented and so valuable in aiding us on future careers."

Student Highlights

Students selected for the program will participate in a variety of seminars and workshops, lecture sessions, leadership conferences and other professional development opportunities at the Academy, which is based at Metro Tech in downtown Brooklyn. Representing John Jay are: Jessica Armstrong, Paulique Cardona, Shirley Chan, Kimmesha Edwards – who are international criminal justice majors – and Elishia Fludd and Carolyn Hernandez who are BA/MA students.
