Special Thanks

Kudos to the outstanding alumni who launched the Fall 2010 alumni calendar by giving back to the College. Speakers who shared personal stories and life lessons during the Graduate Studies Open House and Voices from the Field were Hon. Mary Gotsopoulis, Teresa (Teri) Coaxum, Oscar Odom, III and Claudia Espinosa. Organizers who shared their event management skills during the Washington, DC Fall Open House and the Graduate School Fair include Daniel Cabrera, Jr., James Brito, Andrew Schweighardt, and Jissette Leonardo. And, a special note is in order for alumna Suleyka Canelo, who along with student John Cusick and Director Vielka Holness admirably represented the Pre-Law Institute at our recent Washington, DC Fall Open House. Recruiters who returned to their alma mater for the Graduate School Fair included Yvonne Cherena-Pacheco, Vivian Sobers, and Amy Mangione. John Jay is deeply indebted to each and all of you for your loyalty and enthusiastic support.

John Jay's Criminal Justice Research & Evaluation Center Receives $1 Million to Evaluate Crime Control and Prevention Initiatives
John Jay will share with Temple University a grant of $1 million awarded by the U.S. Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to design and implement a comprehensive process and outcome evaluation of the agency's Community-Based Violence Prevention Demonstration Program (CBVP). The OJJDP's $8.6 million demonstration program will replicate practices in violent crime control and prevention considered to be among the most effective, such as the Boston Gun Project and Chicago's CeaseFire. "These approaches have evolved into promising strategies for violence reduction...yet the empirical research assessing the impact of the initiatives is still developing [and] attempts to replicate the models have not always been successful," said Jeffrey Butts, the Center's Executive Director, who is a Co-principal Investigator on the project along with Gouvis Roman of Temple University. Among the advisors are Professor David Kennedy, Director of the College's Center for Crime Prevention and Control, along with faculty from Temple, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Northwestern University. The four communities in the study are the city and county of Denver Safe City Office; Oakland, CA; the Columbia Heights Shaw Family Support Collaborative; and the Fund for the City of New York/Center for Court Innovation.

Science Majors Get a Boost with $600,000 Grant from Department of Education
The U.S. Department of Education's Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program has awarded $600,000 for the support and expansion of John Jay's Program for Research Initiatives for Science Majors (PRISM). The grant will fund additional student research, stipends, travel to conferences, an annual newsletter and a website that will keep current and former students involved in the program. "I think this will expand the success we've been having moving students from John Jay onto graduate PhD and MD programs," noted Professor Anthony Carpi, who, along with Professors Lawrence Kobilinsky and Nathan Lents of the Department of Sciences are Principal Investigators on the grant.

Alumni Spotlight

A veteran, a detective, a nurse -- these are all descriptions of John Bourges (AS '87) who has served both his community and his country. Growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Bourges joined the NYPD in the late 1970s immediately after the police hiring freeze during the city's financial crisis. "I was 22, so I applied for the Police Academy and graduated in 1979 in the first class after the freeze," he told The Villager. Patrolling the Upper West Side was his first assignment. In the mid-1980s, he was assigned to Washington Heights where he served in Manhattan North Narcotics. He then became a detective serving in the 34th Precinct and was the homicide coordinator for the southern part of the precinct at a time when the crack epidemic was taking its toll on New York City crime rates. He retired after 20 years with the department, and began his studies to become a nurse specializing in intensive and emergency care. His retirement occurred just a couple of weeks before the September 11 attacks. After watching a news report about the need for soldiers with specialized medical training, he applied to join the Army in 2006. He was 50. He deployed to Iraq in 2007-2008 as a critical care nurse providing emergency medical treatment to wounded service members. "September 11 changed me, and it changed a lot of other people too. Hopefully, I've been able to use the change to help others and to give back," he said. "Serving in the military is something that I felt I needed to do after the attack." Now home, he works as a registered nurse at Putnam Hospital and Northern Westchester Hospital. His commitment in the Army Reserves goes to 2014. Bourges said, "If they call me again to active duty, I would do it in a heartbeat."

Lights! Action! Camera! Meet students Christopher Balda and Devynn Brooks. They are the stars of the recently released Jay Tour. This six-and-a-half minute video tour is shot in numerous locations on-and off-campus from the Lloyd Sealy Library to the heart of Times Square. Balda and Brooks survived a two-day audition process en route to becoming the new faces of John Jay. The aim of the video, Balda explained, was to provide insight into the daily life of a John Jay student as well as the broad spectrum of opportunities that the College offers. "John Jay has given so much to me, I'm glad that I can give something back," he says. "The reason I think the video can spark interest for prospective students is because it comes from the mouths of two down-to-earth regular New Yorkers." Brooks described the experience as a "blast." "I feel really excited and honored. Knowing that I can help with the choices a student makes about his or her college career is really great." Although the video is geared to student recruitment, it makes a wonderful walk down memory lane for alumni. See for yourself. Click here.
