Special Thanks

Three stellar alumni volunteers joined President Jeremy Travis, Vice President Berenecea Johnson Eanes and Dean Wayne Edwards at this year's Fall Orientation. Kelly Yip, BA'05, Vice President and Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit for BNP Paribas, described the stages of her professional development and her numerous certifications -- C.I.P.P., C.F.E., C.F.C.I., C.A.M.S., and A.M.L.P. -- and noted that none of her achievements would have possible without John Jay. David J. Cohen, MA'98, a veteran investigator with Milberg, LLP who formerly worked for both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the City of New York Human Resources Administration, encouraged students to utilize the College's wonderful academic resources and networking opportunities which enhanced both his student years and his professional career. Muhammad Faridi, BA'04, JD, a Litigation Associate with Patterson Belknap Webb &Tyler, LLP, and former Law Clerk to the Hon. Jack B. Weinstein, EDNY, eloquently acknowledged the John Jay educators who touched his life, including: Professors Ruth O'Brien, Jack Jacobs, Tim Stevens, Eric Larson, Karen Kaplowitz, Dwight Macdonald, Blanche Wiesen Cook and George Andreopulos. Faridi, who graduated summa cum laude, told the audience,"The care, love and respect that these people had for one another, for each other's ideas and backgrounds, made John Jay a warm place -- an environment conducive for growth and transformation."

We extend special thanks to these loyal alumni for their commitment to the College and for inspiring this year's incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Alumni Spotlight

Katharine Boyd (MA '09)

While a graduate student in the forensic psychology program, Katharine Boyd (MA '09), became the first recipient of the Homeland Security Assistantship where she worked with Professors Scott Atran, Itai Sneh and Charles Strozier. Her work with Dr. Atran involved an open-source research project on jihad networks for the John Jay and ARTIS Transnational Terrorism (JJATT) database. With Dr. Sneh, her research contributed to his book, History Will Judge: An Examination of Torture through the Ages. With Dr. Strozier, she co-authored chapters in the soon to be published, Fundamentalist Mindset: Psychological Reflections on Religion, Violence and History. In summer 2009, Boyd also had the opportunity to conduct open-source research on Al-Qaida in Iraq for the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland. Boyd says she especially values the mentoring she received from the researchers at John Jay and the contacts she made. "I am deeply humbled by the opportunities I received through this assistantship," she says. Boyd is currently enrolled in CUNY's PhD program in criminal justice at John Jay.

Student Highlights

Alyxaundria Sanford, a graduate student in the criminal justice program, recently worked as a paid intern at ABC-TV - Disney Television Group on Good Morning America Weekend and the Brian Ross Investigative Unit where she was heavily involved in production work on both shows. Her specialization in investigative techniques within the criminal justice program came in handy when working with Chief Investigative Reporter Brian Ross and his team on stories about the Fort Hood shooting and the infamous Bernie Madoff. She believes that working in the media and studying criminal justice is a good mix."I am excited to work in the media industry while pursuing my master's in criminal justice at John Jay. Both fields can work well together as a career option." This semester, Sanford will be interning with ABC's The View.
