Subject: A Message from Department of Information Technology

Dear Colleagues:

The Department of Information Technology is undertaking a project to migrate from our current obsolete Windows NT 4.0 system to new Windows 2003 system starting December 4 th, 2006. This migration will include installation of Active Directory. The Active Directory is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) compliant directory service that runs on a Windows server and provides a central logon and management interface for users, computers, printers, information, and network resources. John Jay will use Active Directory as a platform to offer centrally managed services such as information storage, printing, web application deployment and access to network resources such as wireless network authentication and the general student computing labs. Currently ! these fun tions are handled separately and are not on uniform platform. The attached PDF document explains benefits of Active Directory in more detail. Under this project we will also be upgrading our existing server hardware.

The migration process will continue during winter break and the DoIT will ensure that there is minimum interruption to user operations. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact the helpdesk at (212) 237-8200 or the CIO at X8907.
