Wireless Information

Wireless Access is now Available

Members of the John Jay community can now use their personal laptop computers to access the Internet through special wireless connections that are now available:

BMW
North Hall
Westport
Haaren Hall

Additional areas of the campus will be added to the wireless network as this project continues.

Information on Wireless Access at John Jay

Your laptop must contain a wireless adapter that is WiFi (802.11b compatible ) and you must have a John Jay email account.

Faculty or staff members can obtain a John Jay email account through the DoIT helpdesk at x8200. All registered and paid Students are issued an email account.

For Laptops with Mac OS X

If you are using Mac OS X, your AirPort card should readily discover the wireless networks broadcast near you. Below are instructions for ensuring that your Apple AirPort card will connect to the John Jay College wireless network.

  1. From the Apple Menu. Select Location, then Networking.
  2. Set "Show:" to AirPort.
  3. Set "Configure" to use DHCP Server.
  4. Select the AirPort tab and make sure JOHN JAY COLLEGE appears in the SSID or Network field. This sets the "preferred" network when one connects via AirPort.
  5. Verify that the "show airport status in menu bar" option is selected.
  6. Select "Apply Now" to apply these settings for your AirPort card.

All other information will be served by the DHCP server. Once you've checked your AirPort configuration (and provided you have a decent wireless signal), you should be able to connect to John Jay College wireless network.
