An internship should be an exciting, challenging placement in which students are expected to gain valuable work experience in your agency as they are given an opportunity to evaluate career possibilities in a particular field. Under the direction of the agency supervisor, students should assume responsible agency duties, be encouraged to communicate their ideas orally and in writing and develop an awareness of the importance of specific nonverbal forms of communication such as appearance, attitudes and behavior. During the course of their internship, the student should acquire and develop job skills. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will receive three (3) college credits.

FIELD REQUIREMENTS: A total of ninety-six (96) hours of supervised fieldwork must be completed during the semester. Students may work 8-10 hours a week (16-20 during the Summer semester) on a schedule mutually compatible to them and the agency supervisor.

Please take a moment to
fill out the form below indicating that you are interested in having interns referred to your agency. PLEASE NOTE: Interns are pre-screened in our office one semester prior to the semester in which they wish to do the internship. You may then expect to be contacted by students to begin their internships during the following semester. (Please see chart below)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REQUIREMENTS BOX: Please indicate the procedure in which a student must follow to apply. Normally, the contact telephone number is given to the student. The student then calls the contact person to set up a date for an interview with the agency. In addition, we can arrange for interviews to be held on campus. However, if you prefer a different procedure, such as having the student fax a cover letter and resume, please indicate that. If there is a dress code, or special training required, use this box for that as well.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF AGENCY SUPERVISORS

Develop a formal or informal training program to familiarize the student with the function and operation of the agency and allow the student sufficient exposure to other aspects or departments within the agency.

Complete the agency section of the agency Memorandum of Agreement and give the memorandum to the student to return to the Office of Internships.

Select and assign a qualified staff member to be the field supervisor for the student during the internship placement.

Determine, through mutual agreement, the student's working hours. The minimum requirement for fieldwork is eight (8) to ten (10) hours per week. The student will be given credit for a maximum of ten (10) hours per week. Ninety-six (96) hours must be completed for course credit.

Orient the student as to the agency's expectations of appropriate dress and policies pertaining to confidentiality of records, and any other types of significant behavior appropriate to that specific agency.

Allow the student to become sufficiently involved with the clients served by the agency. When appropriate, allow the student to participate in conferences, interviews, training sessions, etc.

Contact the Internship Director (212) 237-8438, when it is felt that problems are disrupting the student's performance while in a placement.

Ensure that the field supervisor is available to aid the Internship Director in the observation of the student's performance.

Complete the required evaluation of the student's performance. The evaluation form will be mailed to you and must be completed and returned to the Office of Internships prior to the 13th week of the semester. The field supervisor should review the contents of the performance evaluation with the student and discuss areas in need of improvement and suggest steps to meet those needs.

Participate with the Internship Director in developing a meaningful experience for the student.

At the termination of the internship, we would suggest, if appropriate, that a letter of recommendation be made available to the student.

Thank you for your interest in our students.
