Fourth Member of the John Jay Community Tapped to Join the Obama Administration

New York, NY, November 23, 2009 – John Jay Alumna Beatrice Wilkinson Welters, MA ’78, is the fourth member of the John Jay College community poised to join the Obama Administration.  President Barack Obama announced that he intends to nominate Ms. Welters as Ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The nomination of Ms. Welters requires confirmation by the United States Senate. 

“We are very proud that another distinguished member our alumni community has been nominated to join the Obama Administration,” said Jeremy Travis, President of John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “We celebrate this milestone in Ms. Welters accomplished career.”

Ms. Welters is currently the President and Chairman of the AnBryce Foundation, which provides long-term academic and leadership enrichment programs for underserved youth. She earned her master’s degree in criminal justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Ms. Welters is the fourth member of the John Jay community selected to serve in the Obama administration. Other faculty and alumni include: Professor James Lynch, distinguished professor of criminal justice at John Jay College, who was nominated to serve as Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), U.S. Department of Justice; Dr. Ellen Scrivner, director of the John Jay College Leadership Academy, who was appointed deputy director of the National Institute of Justice in September; and, alumnus Benjamin B. Tucker, (BS ’77) who was nominated to serve as Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The White House Release said of Welters:

“Beatrice W. Welters is currently the President and Chairman of the AnBryce Foundation, which provides long-term academic and leadership enrichment programs for underserved youth. Ms. Welters founded the Foundation in 1995. From 1977 to 1991, she worked at IBM where she held several roles, including systems engineer. Ms. Welters was also a past Presidential Appointee to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts serving on its Executive Committee. She continues to serve on the Library of Congress Madison Council. Ms. Welters also serves as a Trustee at the Brookings Institute, the Aspen Institute, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Jesuit Academy, and at the Maret School. Ms. Welters holds an A.A. from Ulster County Community College, a B.A. from Manhattanville College, and an M.A. from [John Jay College of Criminal Justice] the City University of New York.”
