John Jay College of Criminal Justice Goes Mobile

First CUNY College to Create its Own App

Tuesday, July 13, 2010, New York, NY – John Jay College of Criminal Justice is the first College in The City University of New York system to feature an app on both the iPhone and Android cell phone platforms. The College now joins the ranks of only a few colleges nationwide to have a smart phone application.

According to Jeremy Travis, President of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, “This exciting innovation will enable us to connect with our entire college community as well as prospective students, through the communications systems that they use daily.”

The free John Jay app will provide access to the College’s sports news and schedules, calendar of events, admissions information, telephone directory, faculty profiles, John Jay College mobile sites, social media, directions, John Jay College newsletters and much, much more! This will enable users to immediately connect with members of the John Jay faculty, learn about the latest college news and register for events that are happening at the College. Faculty, students and staff on the go will now have immediate access to a host of information and services.

The free app is downloadable for iPhone users through the iTunes store and for Android users (as of August 8) from the Android Marketplace. Click here to download the John Jay App.

The app was created in-house by the College’s web manager John Taveras. After reading upwards of 15 books on how to build your own app, Taveras set about constructing the app and then applying to Apple and subsequently Android for approval to have the John Jay app be available through their app stores. “While the entire process from construction to approval was quite a learning experience for me, I was delighted that the College’s app was accepted on our first submission,” Taveras noted.
