Friday, October 22, 2010, New York, NY – John Jay College of Criminal Justice honored Frederick “Fritz” A. O. Schwarz, Jr. a recognized public service leader and IBM’s Smarter Cities for their respective contributions to the cause of justice at the College’s “Educating for Justice” Gala on Thursday, October 21.

Frederick “Fritz” A. O. Schwarz, Jr. received the award for civic leadership in recognition of his efforts to strengthen democracy, the rule of law and environmental and social justice. Presenting the award to Frederick A. O. Schwarz was Jack Rosenthal, President of The New York Times Company Foundation.

According to Jeremy Travis, President of John Jay College, “Fritz Schwarz epitomizes the highest values of citizenship and civic engagement.  He has combined a high-powered private sector legal career with a lifelong commitment to public service.”

IBM’s Smarter Cities received the Award for Corporate Leadership in recognition of its commitment to promote safety, security and sustainability in urban centers around the world. Presenting the award to the Robert Weber, Senior Vice President of Legal and Regulatory Affairs and General Counsel at IBM Corporation was NYC Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano and NYC First Deputy Police Commissioner Rafael Pineiro.

In honoring IBM’s Smarter Cities, President Travis said, “IBM is infusing intelligence into the ways our cities operate. At a time when government budgets are being slashed, we particularly appreciate the work that IBM has done with the New York City Police Department and the New York City Fire Department to design technology platforms that improve public safety.”

The entertainment was provided by Pedro Pablo Martinez, a vocalist and percussionist, who has collaborated with musical legends Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Elton John and has toured with such luminaries as Willie Nelson and Ray Charles.

Proceeds from the evening will support scholarships that will allow John Jay students to stay in school, excel and complete their degrees.

The gala took place at the College, 899 Tenth Avenue (corner of 58^th Street) in New York City.
