The United Nations Student Association of John Jay College, a delegation of 18 students, won three awards at the 2011 National Model United Nations Conference. This marks the seventh year in a row that John Jay College of Criminal Justice has received a Delegation Award at the conference. It also marks the third year in a row that John Jay College of Criminal Justice has received the Outstanding Position Papers Award.

The team was coached by David Sabatelle, a graduate student in the MA International Crime and Justice program, along with faculty advisers Professor Jacques Fomerand of the Political Science Department and Professor Cecile Van de Voorde of the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration.

Each year the United Nations Student Association of John Jay College represents a different Member State of the United Nations. This year's assignment was Ukraine. At the conference, the team earned the Distinguished Delegation Award for its overall performance, the Outstanding Position Papers Award, and the Outstanding Delegates in Committee Award for its performance on the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The John Jay students took on the role as delegates on nine U.N. committees. Delegates deliberated, negotiated, drafted and adopted resolutions and reports on a variety of international issues. Preparation for the conference began in December 2010, during which the students conducted extensive research on aspects of the national, regional and international policies of Ukraine.

The NMUN Conference is attended by more than 3,000 students from 29 countries. The delegation representing John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the 2011 National Model United Nations Conference consisted of John Bae, Norhan Basuni, Popy Begum, Mark Benjamin, Andrea Canepa, Mateusz Fusiek, Trisha Gangadeen, Jon Kelly, Sekou Kesselly, Allen Kim, Almir Kolari, Nadiya Kostyuk, Lenecia Lewis, Marina Leybishkis, Natalia Lysetska, Paul Navarro, Angelina Pienczykowski, Jessica Rivera, David Sabatelle, Jennifer Shim, Malini Singh, Cathryn Weber.

National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN) is a program sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association, a nonprofit organization that advances understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international issues. NMUN New York brings more than 4,000 delegates to New York City each spring. Twenty select committees engage students in discussions of current global issues.
