Assistant Professor Shamik Sengupta Wins Early Career Research Award

New York, NY, February 9, 2012 - Assistant Professor Shamik Sengupta of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, a specialist in wireless communications and networking, has won a prestigious and highly competitive Early Career Research Award from the National Science Foundation. The five-year, $400,000 award, which recognizes scholars whose work shows the greatest potential and promise, will fund Professor Sengupta’s ongoing study of “Survivability and Selfcoexistence in the Battle of Cognitive Radio Network Societies.”

His research will focus on the vulnerability challenges of wireless cognitive radio networks under adversarial conditions, and devise mechanisms that aid survivability and self-coexistence of these networks. “The outcome of the research,” he said, “will help us understand the benefits of interoperability of wireless radio networks across spectrum bands and geographical regions, spectrum agility and open access flexibility, and security vulnerabilities and implications on network reliability.” Further, through this project, Professor Sengupta is committed to tightly integrating research and educational plans that revolve around graduate/undergraduate student mentoring, curriculum enhancement and hands-on testbed-based learning.
