John Jay Welcomes Class of 2016

September 4, 2012, New York, NY – More than 1,800 freshmen, a 6% increase from 2011, have joined the dynamic student body at John Jay College of Criminal Justice this fall. Although the overwhelming majority of the Class of 2016 hails from New York City or State, there is representation from throughout the tri-state area, as well as a dozen other states from coast to coast.

“We are delighted to welcome the Class of 2016 and our returning students,” said President Jeremy Travis. “As a student-centered, service-oriented campus, we are committed to the academic success and personal development of each of our students. As the new academic year begins, we encourage all students to get involved with the life of the College, become immersed in the rigors of higher learning and seek out meaningful interactions with faculty and staff.”

Joining the freshman class are nearly 1,600 transfer students, including some 266 students from the CUNY Justice Academy – a joint degree program created by John Jay and six CUNY community colleges. Preliminary data shows that Justice Academy enrollment at John Jay has more than doubled from last fall.

In addition, approximately 600 new graduate students have enrolled in the College’s masters and doctoral programs. This year, the most popular programs are the Master of Public Administration in Policy and Administration, the Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology and the Master of Arts in Criminal Justice.

The Class of 2016 joins a student body that, according to a recent report from the City University of New York, ranks John Jay first among CUNY senior colleges for student satisfaction with administrative and student support services as well as computer technology services. The total enrollment at John Jay for this academic year, according to preliminary data, will be 15,044, a 3.59% increase over last year.

The CUNY Justice Academy is a transfer-focused collaboration that links associate degree programs in criminal justice, forensic science and forensic financial analysis in six CUNY community colleges to baccalaureate degree programs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Justice Academy ensures that students who complete associate’s degrees in criminal justice-related majors are guaranteed admission to John Jay’s baccalaureate programs.
