John Jay Named Military Friendly School© and “Best for Vets”

Since its founding in pre-Vietnam War era, John Jay College has long been home to countless veterans seeking to launch or advance post-military college educations and careers. That longstanding relationship recently earned two official stamps of approval, with the College being designated as a “military friendly school” by GI Jobs magazine, and being ranked among the Top 50 “Best for Vets” colleges by the Web site militarytimes.com.

The distinctions honor the colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and insure their success on campus.

“This is great news — yet another ‘gift’ to the College,” said President Jeremy Travis, who chairs the Ad Hoc CUNYwide Task Force on Veterans Affairs. 

Director of Counseling Calvin Chin, who worked to secure the twin designations for John Jay, said that the College has been recognized for providing veterans with the best services, programs, scholarships, discounts, clubs, networking and staff.

According to Chin, John Jay currently has an estimated 600 students who are military veterans, and is in the process of hiring a Veterans Services Coordinator. The College has an existing Veterans Resource Center in North Hall, with a “safe room” or lounge area where veterans can congregate and relax.

“This should be a great tool for student recruitment,” said Chin. “Veterans looking for the kind of education John Jay excels will know right away that they will have a welcoming and supportive environment here.”

This fall, 15 John Jay students took part in a resiliency workshop sponsored by the Fordham University Edge4Vets program, which trains veterans how to translate their military strengths into educational and career strengths.
