Professor Veronica Hendrick Awarded Fulbright Scholarship to China

Veronica Hendrick, an Associate Professor of English, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship that will allow her to lecture in China in early 2013.

Hendrick will be based at Shanghai International Studies University but will be lecturing in five provinces throughout China on her field of American Literature and Law. She will be working with graduate students interested in the field, and hopes to influence the way in which literature is written about and studied. She plans to use material from her recent book, Servants, Slaves, and Savages: Reflections of Law in American Literature (Carolina Academic, 2012) to discuss the changing status of bound labors in the colonial and early American periods. 

She will also be teaching an undergraduate course in American literature utilizing fiction with a justice studies theme.  Her research project investigates the types of Chinese-American literature taught in English in China and the cultural exchange it symbolizes.

“This will be my fifth journey to China,” said Hendrick, and I’m looking forward to an extended stay that will develop my cultural understanding and expand my research agenda.”
