Professor Calirman’s New Book Wins Arvey Book Award

Assistant Professor Claudia Calirman's pioneering new book titled "Brazilian Art under Dictatorship: Antonio Manuel, Artur Barrio, and Cildo Meireles" is the recipient of the prestigious Twelfth Annual Arvey Book Award for best book of the year from the Association of Latin American Art (ALAA). Calirman’s book provides a fresh and innovative perspective on art and creativity during the most brutal and repressive years of the military dictatorship in Brazil in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“Among a very strong pool of candidates, 'Brazilian Art under Dictatorship' book stands out for its nuanced insight into a fascinating chapter of Brazilian visual culture said President Margaret A. Jackson from ALAA.

The Association of Latin American Art is an affiliate of the College Art Association and awarded Calirman’s book for the best scholarly book published on the art of Latin America from the Pre-Columbian era to the present. This award is generously funded by the Arvey Foundation and consists of a citation and a $1000 honorarium. The award will be presented at the annual meeting of the College Art Association in New York City in February 2013. The full article on Calirman’s new book can be found here.
