Professor Calirman’s New Book Wins Arvey Book Award

Assistant Professor Claudia Calirman's pioneering new book titled "Brazilian Art under Dictatorship: Antonio Manuel, Artur Barrio, and Cildo Meireles" is the recipient of the prestigious Twelfth Annual Arvey Book Award for best book of the year from the Association of Latin American Art (ALAA). Calirman’s book provides a fresh and innovative perspective on art and creativity during the most brutal and repressive years of the military dictatorship in Brazil in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Association of Latin American Art is an affiliate of the College Art Association and awarded Calirman’s book for the best scholarly book published on the art of Latin America from the Pre-Columbian era to the present. This award is generously funded by the Arvey Foundation and consists of a citation and a $1000 honorarium. Claudia Calirman is an assistant professor in the Department of Art & Music. Her expertise is in Latin American art, Modern art, Contemporary art and Curatorial Studies. She has been a lecturer on the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, NY, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. She was the 2008-09 Leman Visiting Scholar of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) at Harvard University.
