Playwright Karen Malpede’s new work Extreme Whether, an eco-drama about climate change, was featured in the science section of The New York Times. Extreme Whether will have to premiere readings at Theater for the New City in Manhattan on April 8 and 18.  Malpede is the author/director of 16 plays and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts.

In 2011, Malpede’s Another Life, was featured in workshop in the Art of Justice 9/11 Performance Project at John Jay College and at Irondale Center. Another Life, originally published in The Kenyon Review, premiered and is currently running at Theater for the New City in Manhattan. Prophecy premiered in London at the New End Theater, 2008, and at the Fourth St. Theater, starring Kathleen Chalfant, 2010. She is lead editor of Acts of War: Iraq & Afghanistan in Seven Plays, author of A Monster Has Stolen the Sun and Other Plays, editor of Women in Theater: Compassion & Hope. Us in Women on the Verge: Seven Avant-Garde Plays; Better People in Angels of Power and Other Plays; A Lament for Three Women in A Century of Plays by American Women. Her plays: Prophecy, The Beekeeper’s Daughter, Iraq: Speaking of War (a docu-drama) and I Will Bear Witness, co-edited with George Bartenieff from the Diaries of Victor Klemperer, have been premiered by Theater Three Collaborative which she co-founded in 1995.  She has published short fiction and essays on the theater in many journals, including TriQuarterly, Confrontations, New Theater Quarterly, TDR, and the Sunday Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times. She is a McKnight National Playwrights Fellow, a  NYFA Playwriting Fellow, an Open Society Institutes grantee and a member of PEN American Center.
