Professor Susan Opotow of the Department of Sociology was a guest on April 26 on the morning drive-time talk program “Stand Up! With Pete Dominick” on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Opotow discussed her research on the environment and justice and its implication for pro-environmental policy making.

Opotow is a social and organizational psychologist. Her research concerns the social psychology of conflict and injustice. She is interested in antecedents and process of moral exclusion, when a narrow scope of justice leads people to see others as outside the scope of justice and therefore as eligible targets of violence, exploitation, and harm. She studies moral inclusion, when rights and resources are extended more broadly within a society to promote social justice. These studies are situated within a variety of social conflicts including environmental protection and degradation, student disengagement in high school, violence and hate, and the post-disaster and post-war period. She is the Editor of Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology, served as president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Fellow and three of its divisions.
