John Jay Welcomes Law Students from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo

On June 3, John Jay College of Criminal Justice welcomes 11 law school students from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Dominican Republic, who will be in New York City for an intensive two-week course on the U.S. criminal justice system. The group is being hosted jointly by John Jay’s Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies and the CUNY School of Law.

The law students’ visit marks a new stage in the longtime partnership between the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies and the UASD. Every summer for the past several years, John Jay students have been hosted by the UASD as part of a study abroad program to the Dominican Republic led by Professor Luis Barrios. The students learn about the Dominican justice system and about the justice issues surrounding the Haitian-Dominican border.

The first week of the visit will be spent at John Jay in seminars taught by the faculty of the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies. During the second week the students will experience firsthand the U.S. legal system by visiting courtrooms and witnessing actual criminal trials.

The UASD, a public and comprehensive institution of higher education, is the oldest university in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1538 by Pope Paul III.

The visiting students will be welcomed in a ceremony to be held at 12:30 PM on June 3, in the 9th Floor Conference Room of John Jay’s New Building, 524 West 59th Street. The group will be welcomed by Professor Lisandro Perez, Chair of the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies, and by Fred Rooney, representing the CUNY School of Law. The event is sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies and Dean Anne Lopes.

A number of officials of the UASD are expected to attend, including:

Dr. Antonio Medina
