CUNY Service Corps Matching Fair Held at John Jay College

The CUNY Service Corps held its first event at John Jay College in August. The employer/student Matching Fair drew a full house of eager students, employers and staff members.

The CUNY Service Corps is an innovative program launched to mobilize CUNY students as well as faculty and staff to work on projects that improve the short and long-term civic, economic and environmental sustainability of communities in the five boroughs of the city. It is the largest program of its kind at an American public university today. The Fair served to match over 850 CUNY students with over 90 partner sites. The placements focused on four thematic areas to better New York City: health, environmental conservation, education and economical sustainability.

John Jay College is one of seven CUNY campuses selected to participate in the Service Corps. Two hundred John Jay students have been selected to join the Corps –
the highest participation  among CUNY campuses.

The goal of the CUNY Service Corps complements John Jay’s mission of “educating for justice”. Our co-curricular programs, faculty research, and educational offerings aim to, as indicated in our mission statement, “inspire students to the highest ideals of citizenship and public service.”  The majority of John Jay students live and work in New York City and seek opportunities to serve their communities in substantive and innovative ways. John Jay’s participation in the program will enable our students to pursue their academic and civic interests while furthering the college’s mission.
