Professor Hartwig Tells Financial Advisors: Spotting a Liar isn't Easy

Associate Professor of Psychology Maria Hartwig, an expert in the detection of deception and lying, is cited in an article on the Web site financial-planning.com in which she discusses the difficulty of spotting falsehoods. Professor Hartwig is working with the CFA Institute, a nonprofit organization of investment professionals, on developing a methodology to help those in the finance industry improve their ability to detect deception.

Professor Hartwig has published extensively on the psychology of deception and its detection, and on interview and interrogation techniques, and has trained a variety of legal professionals, including prosecutors, judges, police detectives and military officers. In 2012, she received the Saleem Shah Award for Early Career Excellence in Psychology and Law, awarded by the American Psychology-Law Society and the American Academy of Forensic Psychology.
