John Jay College’s status as a “Best for Vets” institution took on enhanced luster in the latest national rankings of 600 universities by Military Times EDGE magazine, which lists John Jay as #16 nationally, up from#37, tops among all New York City colleges and universities, and the only City University campus to make the list.

The rankings honor the colleges and universities, including four-year and two-year schools, as well as online and nontraditional programs, that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus

“We believe that our nation’s military veterans deserve the very best we can provide to help ease their transition back into civilian life. Even our best efforts on their behalf are but a token thank-you, given the magnitude of their service,” said President Jeremy Travis, who chaired the CUNY Task Force on Veterans Affairs.

Previously cited as “Best for Vets” in the magazine’s 2013 survey, John Jay has long been home to countless veterans, with some 500 currently enrolled. The John Jay College Foundation’s Board of Trustees recently added to the College’s “military-friendliness” with the convening of a roundtable of corporate and nonprofit executives who will be exploring how to create, improve and sustain efforts in the education and employment of veterans.

The fourth annual college survey by Military Times EDGE – the premier publication for military transition – gauged a variety of factors that make an institution a good fit for veterans, including service member enrollment, percentage of tuition covered by the GI Bill, the availability of specific programs to help service members and, this year, an increased emphasis on academic rigor.
