Professor John Gutierrez’s Op-Ed on Newly Elected NYC Council Speaker Published in El Diario/La Prensa

Assistant Professor John Gutiérrez’s op-ed on the historic election of Melissa Mark Viverito as the first Latina Speaker of the New York City Council was published in El Diario/La Prensa.

Professor Gutierrez is a member of the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies. His academic research focuses on the intersection of medicine, modernity and politics in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. In addition to his work on the history of disease and medicine, Professor Gutiérrez is interested in the history of Latinos in the United States and particularly the history of Latino political engagement in the United States. Before joining John Jay College, he was a consultant advising political campaigns as well as corporate and non-profit clients in New York City. In 2013, Professor Gutiérrez launched La Vuelta, a monthly podcast focusing on Latin American and Latino history, politics and culture.
