Adjunct Professor Joseph Giacalone Cited in CNN.com Article on Heroin Death Investigations

John Jay College adjunct professor Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD detective commander, told CNN.com recently that the police response to the drug-related death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is in some respects typical, with some such deaths consuming more police resources and yielding faster results than others.

Within three days, police arrested four people in connection with the drugs found in Hoffman’s apartment. In Giacalone’s estimation, the police response in the Hoffman case was clearly influenced by the media attention surrounding an apparent overdose death of a celebrity. "The more attention that these things get in the media, the more likelihood there's going to be a strong police response," said Giacalone.
