Professor Belinda Rincón in the Latin American and Latina/o Studies and English Departments was chosen as one of six participants in the inaugural class of the Young Scholars Symposium organized by the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Its goals are to help junior scholars perfect their scholarly projects under the mentorship of a partnering senior scholar. The convening senior scholar for 2014 is Professor Arlene Dávila of New York University. The six selected scholars were chosen from a competitive pool of 92 applicants.

“It is a great honor to have been selected as a participant in the inaugural Young Scholars Symposium,” said Rincón. “There are very few opportunities for junior scholars to workshop their manuscripts and receive feedback from a distinguished group of Latino Studies faculty from the University of Notre Dame. To have Dr. Arlene Dávila read and respond to our work is particularly gratifying, as Dr. Dávila’s body of scholarship has influenced my work on the rise of military advertising and recruitment campaigns that target Latina/o youth. I look forward to participating in what will undoubtedly be an intellectually rewarding experience.”

Her teaching and research interests include Latina/o literature and film, U.S. ethnic literature, feminist and gender studies, and war studies. She specializes in Chicana/o literary and cultural studies. Professor Rincón is currently completing a manuscript entitled Bodies at War: Genealogies of War and Militarism in Chicana Literature that examines Chicana writers and activists whose work critically engages with the histories of war and the militarization of culture and gender. In 2009, the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies awarded her the Frederick Cervantes Graduate Essay Award for an essay on the military recruitment of Latina/o youth excerpted from her manuscript.
