Rossana Rosado, the former Publisher and CEO of El Diario-La Prensa, the nation’s oldest Spanish-language newspaper, has been named as a Distinguished Lecturer in John Jay College’s Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies. Rosado, who will join the John Jay faculty beginning with the Fall 2014 semester, will teach a course on Latina/os in the United States.

"We are honored that Rossana Rosado, one of New York City's leading journalists and media executives, has chosen John Jay College as the educational institution that will benefit from her remarkable energy and creativity,” said John Jay President Jeremy Travis. “Her decision to lead the College's Latino Initiative will help the College focus on the challenges facing our Hispanic students, who constitute over 40 percent of our student body, while mobilizing external resources to support them on their road to success. Students fortunate enough to study with Ms. Rosado will be the true beneficiaries. They will gain a deeper understanding of Latino heritage and history, and learn about journalism from a true professional. We welcome her to the John Jay family."

Rosado’s 30-year media career included 18 years with El Diario-La Prensa, where she was Editor in Chief prior to serving as Publisher and CEO for 14 years. She retired after leading the newspaper to its centennial and solidifying its role as a Latino thought leader. During her distinguished career she has won an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award, among other honors. She also served in the mayoral administrations of David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani as Vice President for Public Affairs of New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Rosado has had a long relationship with John Jay and the City University of New York. She recalled that as an undergraduate journalism major at Pace University, she created her own independent study courses on Latino/Puerto Rican studies. She spent countless hours conducting research at El Centro, which was then located at John Jay and is now headquartered at Hunter College.

“To be able to return to John Jay as a Distinguished Lecturer and to teach the course on Latina/os in the United States is especially gratifying to me,” Rosado said. “I’m excited to begin this new chapter at John Jay, where I can combine my expertise in Latino affairs, my passions for women’s leadership and for prisoner reentry, my deep admiration for President Travis and my dream to serve students.”

The Latino Initiative that Rosado will steer seeks to build a community that embraces the vast number of Latino professionals citywide and make John Jay a Latino destination for talent, thinkers and potential supporters.

Rosado has an extensive background in working on behalf of formerly incarcerated men and women, as a volunteer, consultant and advocate. She has served on the advisory board of The Fortune Society and on Gov. David Paterson’s Task Force on Juvenile Justice. She also serves on the board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and on the John Jay College Foundation Board of Trustees.
