Professor Erin Thompson’s Op-ed on Trafficking of Ancient Art Published in New York Times

Professor Erin Thompson of the Department of Art and Music authored an op-ed commentary, titled “Egypt’s Looted Antiquities,” that was published in The New York Times on May 30, in which she called for greater attention to be paid to the increased international traffic in antiquities.

The increase has been fueled in part by political upheaval in Egypt, Professor Thompson points out, which in turn led to diminished protection of archeological sites and museums. While authorities there have since tried to stem the traffic in ancient art, Professor Thompson’s op-ed calls for a more demand-oriented approach to curbing the illegal trade, particularly in the United States.
