Class of 2014 Makes Its Mark on John Jay – and on Twitter!

More than 3,000 students became the newest John Jay alumni on May 28 when they received their degrees in dual Commencement ceremonies held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center North, at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM.

The newly minted graduates made history when a group “selfie” engineered from the podium by President Jeremy Travis was tweeted and retweeted in record numbers, making it the number-two Twitter trending upload nationally. The hashtag, #JJCGrad, trended in second place for 30 minutes on the social network.

During the Commencement, President Travis pulled out a cell phone and encouraged graduates and guests to do likewise, and then post the results on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or other social-media site. At the count of three, the President held the phone camera aloft and took his own photo, as thousands of flashes went off in the audience.
