Professor John Gutierrez Quoted in NY Times on Results of Primary Election in 13th Congressional District

John Gutiérrez, Assistant Professor in the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies, was quoted in a recent New York Times article on the results of the primary election in New York’s 13th Congressional District which includes Harlem, the northern tip of Manhattan and a section of the Bronx. In the article, Professor Gutierrez examines factors that led to State Senator Adriano Espaillat’s loss to incumbent Representative Charles Rangel.

Professor Gutierrez’s academic research focuses on the intersection of medicine, modernity and politics in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. In addition to his work on the history of disease and medicine, Professor Gutiérrez is interested in the history of Latinos in the United States and particularly the history of Latino political engagement in the United States. Before joining John Jay College, he was a consultant advising political campaigns as well as corporate and non-profit clients in New York City. In 2013, Professor Gutiérrez launched La Vuelta, a monthly podcast focusing on Latin American and Latino history, politics and culture.
