Peter Moskos, Assistant Professor in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration, recently published an op-ed, titled “When Should Cops Use Force?,” in the New York Daily News. In the piece, Professor Moskos examines at the guidelines in the NYPD Patrol Guide that pertain to making arrests and use of force. He writes that, “many police would do well to remember that effective compliance is as much earned as ordered.”

Moskos's three books -- Cop in the Hood, In Defense of Flogging, and Greek Americans (3rd edition) -- have won high praise and earned him recognition as one of The Atlantic magazine's "Brave Thinkers" of 2011. He has also published in the Washington Post, Washington Monthly, New York Times, Macleans, Pacific Standard, Slate, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and his blog, Copinthehood.com.

A former Baltimore City police officer, Moskos specializes in police culture, crime prevention, qualitative methods, and ending the war on drugs.

In addition to his primary duties at John Jay College, Moskos is a faculty member in CUNY's Doctoral Programs in Sociology and Criminal Justice, teaches introductory police classes at LaGuardia Community College in Queens, and is a Senior Fellow of the Yale Urban Ethnography Project.
