Professor John Gutierrez Discusses Impact of Restored U.S.-Cuba Relations in Daily News Op-ed and Other Media Outlets

Assistant Professor John Gutiérrez of the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies discusses the announcement that the United States will normalize relations with Cuba in a New York Daily News op-ed. He was also interviewed for Univision, Fox 5 News, NY1’s Pura Politica and MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry program.

Professor Gutierrez’s academic research focuses on the intersection of medicine, modernity and politics in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. In addition to his work on the history of disease and medicine, Professor Gutiérrez is interested in the history of Latinos in the United States and particularly the history of Latino political engagement in the United States. Before joining John Jay College, he was a consultant advising political campaigns as well as corporate and non-profit clients in New York City. In 2013, Professor Gutiérrez launched La Vuelta, a monthly podcast focusing on Latin American and Latino history, politics and culture.
