First Year Advisement & |
|
The Office of First Year Advisement & Freshman Peer Mentoring is responsible for the registration and advisement of all students with less than 30 credits. Thirty credits is traditionally where the transition from freshman year to sophomore year takes place. To ensure that every student is properly advised and registered, a restriction called the “EF Stop” is placed for the most part on a student’s record if the student has between 0 and 29 credits. This includes any first semester student, student in a remediation course (Com 101, Com 102, EngW100, Math 100, Math 103), student experiencing academic difficulty (GPA below 2.0), student who has not yet passed all three of the CUNY Placement Exams or a student who from the previous semester, has an INC or R grade and has not yet resolved this issue. Once a student has been properly advised, the “EF Stop” is temporarily cleared for a specified amount of time and the student is free to register via e-SIMS. The “EF Stop” is permanently cleared once the student reaches 30 credits.
The Freshmen Peer Mentoring Program provides first-year students with the opportunity to become acquainted with the John Jay College Community. The peer mentors are upper-division honor students, each involved in additional activities and organizations throughout the college. Prior to the start of each semester, the peer mentors are assigned to their cohort of students usually by majors. The cohorts vary each semester from approximately 180-300 students depending on the enrollment class of that year. The majors of the freshman peer mentors and the entering freshman class are matched as a way to ensure some commonality between peer mentor and freshman as well as providing an academic guide to their major.
Each freshman receives a welcome and introductory letter from their peer mentor with an invitation for a meeting at the beginning of the semester. Students and their peer mentors interact via email or meeting in the freshman peer mentoring office for the rest of the semester. Students are sent a weekly email from their peer mentor that varies from peer mentor related activities to important college announcements such as the academic withdrawal date. During the semester, the peer mentors organize a host of activities including weekly workshops, social events, poetry readings, and sporting events. Peer mentors also provide academic advisement to ensure that all first year students are taking the appropriate steps to developing a sound academic plan.
