Re:      Invitation to Apply for Presidential Fellows for Curriculum-Driven Student Success

Dear Faculty:

At Faculty Development Day, we discussed plans to launch the inaugural Presidential Fellows for Curriculum-Driven Student Success, and we write today to provide additional information about this exciting opportunity and to invite you to apply.

Presidential Fellows for Curriculum-Driven Student Success

Curriculum is the heart of a college education, and it is the responsibility of faculty to design, modify, and assess curriculum regularly and in partnership with others.  As John Jay embarks on a new student success initiative with ambitious goals to raise student graduation rates, we want to examine our curriculum design and delivery methods in order to understand where our curriculum upholds the highest standards of student learning and engagement, and where it needs to be redesigned in order to propel student gains.

The John Jay College Offices of the President and Provost invite faculty to apply for Presidential Fellowships for Curriculum-Driven Success in 2019.  Up to six Presidential Fellows will spend one year working on individual major or program-centered curriculum projects in consultation with a cohort of other Fellows, the Director of the Teaching and Learning Center, the Director of General Education, and the Director of Assessment in order to:

a)      learn more about the progress and outcomes of students in their majors or programs;

b)     study best practices for enhancing student retention and/or post-graduate outcomes from around the country and within their disciplines, whether in the form of curricular change, pedagogical interventions, faculty development and/or coordination, internship programs, or other forms of intervention; and

c)      develop a targeted plan that will enhance student success in their programs.

Presidential Fellows will consult with the President, the Provost, and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies twice in the year, first to discuss student success challenges in their academic programs, and second to propose solutions. Solutions will be tied to explicit assessment goals to help more students succeed in their program. Proposed projects will be grounded in evidence-based practices, will include an evaluation component, and must have a sustainability plan for deepening faculty and student engagement.

Each Presidential Fellow will receive $4000 in recompense for attendance at monthly meetings, designing a plan, and beginning to implement that plan by the end of the year.
