Philip T. Yanos, Ph.D., received a doctorate in clinical psychology from St. John’s University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Mental Health Services Research at Rutgers University’s Institute for Health. Prior to coming to John Jay, he was a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He is currently supported by a NIMH Patient-Oriented Career Development Award. He is committed to studying issues related to the recovery and successful community integration of persons with severe and persistent mental illness. Specific areas of interest include the impact of active coping and other psychological variables on community adjustment, the impact of involvement in self-help or psychosocial rehabilitation services on outcomes, and the impact of financing factors (e.g., Medicaid/Medicare, lack of health insurance) on quality of care for persons with severe mental illness. Having worked with dually diagnosed persons in the criminal justice settings, Dr. Yanos is also interested in studying treatment, diversion and discharge planning interventions for persons diagnosed with severe mental illness involved with the criminal justice system.
